fix(chat): name a Pi pane's model from its footer before its first turn - #2711
A Pi pane that has had no turn yet answered /api/pane/conversation with model: null and reasoning_effort: null, so Chat showed "No model" until Pi's first reply. Pi writes no model into its session file before a turn, but its footer's stats row names the model id (the same id its transcript records later) and thinking level from the start.
This registers a pi-transcript start screen in server/start-screen.ts, next to the Claude, Codex and gjc ones. It reads the bottom-most stats row (0.0%/262k (auto) (provider) model-id • high), including the (provider) prefix Pi adds when several providers are configured, • thinking off as off, no level for a non-reasoning model, and no-model as unknown. Because a Pi pane's not-begun answer now carries screen: true, the chat re-reads it on pane output, so a model changed with Ctrl+P before the first turn shows up too.
Not in this PR: the issue also proposes passing a model and thinking level chosen at New Session to Pi as --model/--thinking. That is a separate launch feature.
A row Pi cut down to fit a narrow pane (it pads such a row with exactly two spaces and no marker) names no model rather than a cut-off id.
Reproduction
On origin/main 9381612, real Pi 1.5.0 in an isolated herdr test session with a mkdtemp HOME/PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR (a local custom provider, no request made):
bun run check fast: green at the final head (typecheck, build, unit tests 10922 pass).
bun run check run bun test --timeout 30000 ./server/start-screen.contract.test.ts ./server/pi.contract.test.ts: pass.
The new unit test (start-screen.test.ts) and the new contract test (start-screen.contract.test.ts, a Pi pane with an unwritten session over HTTP) both fail with server/start-screen.ts reverted to main, and pass with it.
Skipped: check integration browser (no UI change; CI runs it).

New Features
Chat now displays a Pi pane’s model and thinking level as soon as it opens, without waiting for the first reply.
Pi transcript start screens now provide model and thinking-level metadata from the footer. Tests cover footer parsing and a fresh session with no turns.

Summary
Parse Pi footer metadata server/start-screen.ts, server/start-screen.test.ts
The start-screen parser reads the last matching Pi footer stats row and extracts the model and reasoning effort. The pi-transcript source uses this parser. Tests cover provider-prefixed models, thinking levels, and missing or incomplete metadata.
The contract test checks that a fresh Pi session with no turns returns transcript and screen metadata, a history ID, and footer-derived model and reasoning effort. The changelog describes the displayed metadata.
devswha/ovis#2639: Defines Pi footer status lines below the stats row that this change parses.
devswha/ovis#1934: Updates Chat metadata from a provider’s current model when transcript metadata is unavailable.
Merge Risk: Low · previous review 73d47
Pi model detection is mergeable with awareness of a narrow footer-row ambiguity that can display incorrect metadata before the first turn.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #2583 requires the Chat data to expose Pi's model when a pane has no turn and to reflect model changes. server/start-screen.ts registers pi-transcript and parses the bottom footer stats row. The parser handles provider prefixes, thinking off, absent thinking levels, no-model, and narrow rows with only two spaces. The unit tests cover these cases. The HTTP contract test verifies an unwritten Pi session returns screen: true, the model, and the reasoning effort.

Explanation
The changed parser, unit tests, HTTP contract test, environment cleanup, and changelog entry directly support issue #2583. The New Session --model and --thinking launch feature is explicitly excluded in the current PR description and is not required for this Chat start-screen fix.

Review round 1 (omo + Codex Terra xhigh at 4d3c671): no HIGH.
Fixed in this push:
MEDIUM (reproduced by the omo reviewer): on a narrow pane, Pi cuts the model id with no marker and pads the row with exactly 2 spaces, so the cut id was read as the model. The stats row now needs at least 3 spaces of padding; a possibly cut row names no model (same as before this PR). Unit case added.
LOW: the contract test now restores PI_CODING_AGENT_DIR instead of deleting it.
Left as is (LOW, unreproduced with a real Pi): an extension status line drawn below the stats row and shaped exactly like one would be read first. No real extension doing this was found.
CodeRabbit was rate-limited on this PR ("Review limit reached"), so it did not review it.
Review round 2 (omo + Codex Terra at 73d4720): CLEAR, no HIGH or MEDIUM. Two LOW parser edge cases, left as is per the review policy (no follow-up issue):
When the live stats row is cut to fit (rejected) while an older Pi footer from an earlier session still sits higher on the screen, the older row is read instead.
A model id with a double-width character cut in a very narrow pane can leave three spaces of padding, so a cut-off id could still be read.
Both need a narrow pane plus an unusual screen or model id.
Add a case with an earlier complete stats row above the truncated row.
The narrow-pane assertion uses a single truncated row, so a change that returns an earlier complete row would still pass. Add a fixture with a complete stats row above the truncated one. piScreen scans upward through lastMatch, so that case returns the earlier model today. Decide the intended result before asserting it.

Add a `startScreenMetadata` test case with an earlier complete stats row
followed by the truncated row, and establish the intended metadata result for
that input. Check the upward scan in `piScreen` and its `lastMatch` handling to
ensure the behavior matches that result.
Add a second read after the Pi footer model changes.
The contract test reads the Pi pane once, before any footer change. A regression that keeps the first footer model would still pass. After the pane shows another model, read it again and assert the new metadata.model and reasoning_effort.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
lastMatch skips a newest footer row that has fewer than three padding spaces and can return an older, fully matched row. A truncated current model could therefore leave the previous model reported instead of an unknown model.
Chat may display the old model as Pi's current model.
This can occur when: A Pi pane is narrowed after a model change, and its live viewport contains both an earlier complete stats row and a newer row whose model ID was cut off.

- Line 97: Update the stats-row selection in piScreen around lastMatch so it
identifies the row by its position in Pi’s footer layout, rather than accepting
the last line that matches the pattern. Ensure the match handles space runs
separated by ANSI style codes and extracts the model only from the actual stats
row, not an extension-status row below it.
